Nizayama Forest Art Museum

The Nizayama art forest is located in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, and the Northern Alps amidst a picturesque sprawling mountain range and the Kurobe River alluvial fan. Located in the middle of the forest is “Hatsudensho Bijutsukan” (Nizayama Forest Art Museum), a typical Taisho era style building made out of red bricks. Built in 1926 (Taisho era 15), this establishment was the former Kurobe River Second Power Station and was intended to be demolished but has been revitalized to be an art museum since April 1995. In December 1996 the museum was designated as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property. The museum is considered to be rare for its juxtaposition of a modernized historical architecture from Taisho era with contemporary art, exemplified through independent exhibitions like Rei Naito (2007) and Kenji Yanobe (2010). Rebuilt in a way to preserve as many traces of the power station as possible, the museum features a ceiling that stretches 10-meter high with bare iron trusses. 1 of the 3 original power generators remains as it used to be and a 3-meter diameter water conduit on the wall widely opens where a generator used to sit, on which the red rust serves as a reminder of the water that used to flow through this place.
