吕胜中 LV Shengzhong

吕胜中,1952年生于山东平度市大鱼脊山村,中国当代最具代表性的艺术家,立足传统,开拓现代语境。现为中央美术学院教授,硕士、博士生导师。2004年受命创办实验艺术工作室,2007年改建实验艺术系,2014年成立实验艺术学院,任系主任、院长。

主要艺术创作有《山水书房》、《剪纸招魂》、《彳亍》、《生命-瞬间与永恒》、《腊月集》等。主要著作有《觅魂记》、《走着瞧》、《再见传统》、《意匠文字》、《娃崽背带》、《五彩衣裳》、《造型原本》、《小红人的故事》等。

从80年代深入陕西农村,与民间剪纸艺人一起研究和整理中国传统民间文化,是新时期以来中国传统民间艺术研究的重要专家。在同时期的艺术创作中,他将古老民间艺术的精神性特征引入作品之中,其代表作剪纸 “小红人”,传达了中国传统美术在现代蜕变历程中的强大力度,并将这种力度推向世界,被视之为一个时代的文化灵魂。

吕胜中从85美术新潮开始至今,一直是中国当代艺术的代表人物,受到国内外的普遍关注。作为中国 “85美术新潮” 时期的代表艺术家之一,他以剪纸 “小红人” 为基本表现符号,1992年参加了第九届卡塞尔文献展外围展 “相互认识”、1994年福冈第四届亚洲美术展、1995年第一届光州双年展、2003年第五十届威尼斯双年展。

2004年起,吕胜中受学校委托创办并执教中央美术学院的实验艺术(工作室)系,之后几乎将全部精力投入新专业学科的搭建、以及对学生无微不至的教学引领之中。他将传统非物质文化遗产考察、当代的创作方法、材料与图像研究和呈现,融汇为中国新实验艺术教育谱系。2014年,中央美术学院正式成立实验艺术学院,吕胜中任首任院长。

Born in Pingdu City of Shandong Province, in 1952., Lv Shengzhong, based upon tradition and exploring in the modern context, is one of the most representative contemporary artists in China. He is a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), a Master’s and Doctoral Supervisor. In 2004, he was appointed to set up the Experimental Art Studio in CAFA. In 2007, he rebuilt the Department of Experimental Art. In 2014, he set up the School of Experimental Art, serving as its Director and Dean.

His key artworks include ‘Landscape Library’, ‘Paper-Cut: Calling the Soul’, ‘Chì-Chù’, ‘Life: Ephemeral and Eternal’, ‘La Yue Ji’, etc. His key publications include ‘Seeking the Soul’, ‘Walking and Observing’, ‘Farewell Tradition’, ‘Drafting Characters’, ‘Baby’s Gallus’, ‘Colored Clothes’, ‘Original Manuscript of Molding’, ‘The Story of Little Red Figures’, etc.

From the 1980’s, he headed to the countryside of Shanxi Province to study and categorize traditional Chinese folk culture, which led him to become an important expert in the study of Chinese Traditional Folk Art in our contemporary times. In artistic creation, he introduced the spiritual characteristics of ancient folk art into his works. His paper-cut masterpiece ‘Little Red Figures’ conveyed the strength of Chinese traditional art in its transformation into modernity, the artist has pushed this strength onto a world-wide stage. In this regard, Lv Shengzhong is a key cultural existence of our times.

As a key figure of Chinese Contemporary Art ever since the early days of the 85 New Wave movement in China, Lv Shengzhong has been widely recognized at home and abroad. As one of the key figures of 85 New Wave, he and his paper-cut artwork ‘Little Red Figures’ acted as his basic way of expression and had participated in the peripheral exhibition (‘Begenung Mit Den Anderen’) of the 9th Kassel Documenta in 1992, the 4th Asian Art Show in Fukuoka in 1994, the 1st Gwangju Biennale in 1995, and the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003.

Since 2004, Lv Shengzhong has been commissioned by CAFA to establish and teach at the Department of Experimental Art. After that, he devoted almost all his attention to the construction of newly emerged subjects and the meticulous teaching towards his students. Lv Shengzhong integrated his studies of intangible cultural heritages, creative methods in contemporary art, innovative materials and images into the department’s new and experimental art education. In 2014, CAFA established the School of Experimental Art, with Lv Shengzhong as its first Dean.
