The installation ‘House Memory’ was created in the Matsunoyama area, Niigata Prefecture, Japan in 2009. It remained in the village and was meticulously looked after by the local people about ten years. For the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field 2018, the installation opened officially to the public again. The festival period was from July 29 to September 17, 2018.
The artist, Chiharu Shiota, has been living in Berlin. During a two-week stay in Echigo-Tsumari, she filled the inside of vacant house from floor to ceiling with a web of black yarn. Woven into the web were objects collected from local villagers that “they are not using, but can’t throw away.” The memories steeped in the old furniture, clothing, books, and deserted house are carefully spun into the web. A total of 550 yarn balls, with a total length of 44,000 meters, were used by the artist and 5 staff members.
“I am thankful for the cooperation of all of the villagers, without whom this project could not have been completed.” – Chiharu Shiota
